Providence Police Capt To Retire Amid Controversy

A Providence police officer who was sentenced to probation for using excessive force is retiring.

Stephen Gencarella a captain who worked for the department for over 25 years, filed retirement papers on Friday after he was sentenced on a no-contest plea to misdemeanor assault the day before.

The Mayor's office will not take action against the retirement.

The city had sought to fire Gencarella for an incident last Fourth of July weekend where he was filmed slamming a suspect's head to the ground.
