Officer Suspended But Will Keep His Job After Altercation

A Providence police officer who was charged with assault and acquitted is being allowed to keep his job.

The Providence Police Department moved to fire Jeann Lugo through the Law Enforcement Officers' Bill of Rights process.

A LEOBOR committee voted this week to overturn the action, instead handing down a ten-day suspension.

Lugo was accused of assaulting a political opponent running for state office at an abortion rights rally last summer.

The committee said his off-duty use-of-force was justified, but they faulted him for failure to notify his superiors.
