Bottle Battles Over Deposits In RI & Mass

He hasn't said one way or the other whether he would ultimately sign a Bottle Deposit Law, but Governor Mc Kee is allowing for an independent study of the measure.

Rhode Island is just one of a few states without such a law designed to promote recycling.

Under a proposed legislative item, a ten cent per bottle deposit would be charged. Proponents say it will keep the state cleaner.

As Rhode Island considers instituting such a measure- Massachusetts is considering revamping its law.

Lawmakers are considering a measure that would raise the deposit to ten cents per bottle and tie all future increases to the deposit to the rate of inflation.

It is unclear when Massachusetts or Rhode Island lawmakers will take up their state's proposals.
