High Court Strikes Down Affirmative Action In College Admissions

Many elected officials in Massachusetts are condemning today's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that strikes down affirmative action at colleges and universities. Governor Maura Healey called it disappointing. Senator Elizabeth Warren said an extremist court has reversed decades of established law. Congresswoman Lori Trahan said the ruling turns back the clock on progress made to ensure equitable access to higher education.

Meantime, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse tweeted out his reaction to the high court ruling:

"As Republicans try to eliminate teaching about race discrimination from school curriculums, the right wing of the Court chimes in with its own rewrite of history, here affecting college admissions, a key gateway to success in modern society."

President Biden says he strongly disagrees with the Supreme Court decision rejecting the use of race in college admissions. Speaking from the White House, Biden said the use of affirmative action in admissions did not allow for unqualified students enter college.

The High Court today ruled against the use of policies in which an applicant's race is taken into account in the admissions process at both Harvard University and University of North Carolina.
