Council Passes Ban On New Self-Storage Units

The Providence City Council is banning new self-storage facilities.

The sponsor of the ordinance, Miguel Sanchez, says the self-storage industry has grabbed up the scarce amount of available land in the capital city which ought to be used to address the state's housing crisis.

The ordinance does not impact the dozen-or-so facilities that already exist or have been approved for construction.

Mayor Brett Smiley is expected to sign the measure within the next couple of days.
