RI Records First West Nile Virus Mosquito

West Nile virus has been detected for the first time in Rhode Island this year, in a mosquito sample from Westerly.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said Friday that the positive sample came from a trap set on July 24th.

Massachusetts has had 21 samples test positive and Connecticut has had three.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Rhode Island yet this year.

The experts say it has been a more active mosquito season with the heat and the rains and therefore it is more likely that the trend will continue to spike.
