Court To Decide Ownership Of Temple

The state Supreme Court will determine the ownership of a Providence synagogue.

Congregation Jeshuat Israel has paid New York-based Shearith Israel a "symbolic" one dollar "rent" each year since 1903 to worship at Touro Synagogue.

Shearith Israel ended the agreement in February and wants to bring in a new tenant, Congregation Ahavath Israel of Newport.

In August, a Superior Court judge ruled that Shearith Israel could proceed to evict the current tenant, but stayed the eviction to allow for an appeal to be filed.
