Former Firefighter Pleads Not Guilty To Fraud Charges

A former Newport firefighter has pleaded not guilty to embezzlement and fraud charges.

Marcus Cochran had served as treasurer of Newport Firefighters IAFF Local 1080 until February of this year.

Officials say Cochran, over a period of several years embezzled from the account that held union dues and fraudulently used a union credit card for personal expenses, including airline travel, hotel bookings, and a gym membership.

The total amount believed stolen was more than 100-thousand-dollars.

Cochran, who is free on bond, reportedly has returned at least 80 thousand of the money. He faces a pretrial conference in January.
