City Council Approves Safe Injection Site For Providence

The first state-regulated overdose prevention center in the U.S. could open this summer in Providence.

Project partners announced on Wednesday that a location on Willard Avenue next to Rhode Island Hospital has been secured.

Trained professionals will supervise the site, and people will be able to use safe substances or test those in their possession.

On Thursday, City Council members voted unanimously to authorize the center.

Rhode Island was the first state to legalize safe injection sites in 2021.
