Protesters Seek Protections From Bus Cuts

Protestors rallied at the State House on Wednesday, in opposition to proposed cuts in service and changes to the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.

The main concerns are RIPTA plans to cut back service on nearly 30 routes due to budget issues, plus the plan for a new transit center that would be built outside the downtown area.

Commuters say the changes, if approved would disrupt anyone using the bus system.

RIPTA officials told the House Finance Committee that the current budget does not meet funding needs. A second protest is planned for next week.
