Tiverton Ponders Solutions To Budget Problems

Tiverton school officials heard from the public at a forum over proposals that would close its budget deficit.

The district is nearly 4-point-8-million dollars in the red, and officials have considered closure of the Fort Barton Elementary School, cuts to personnel, and moving some fourth-grade students to the middle school.

Superintendent Peter Sanchioni and officials were criticized for their use of school emergency relief funds to balance the budget over the past three years.

Sanchioni pointed out cuts in state assistance, rising expenses, and out-of-district special education costs as part of the issues before the district.

Stakeholders were asked to call on the Town Council to see if an increase in the school budget could be provided.
