Mayor Smiley To Decide Soon On South Water Street Bike Lane

Hundreds of cyclists and their supporters rallied in Providence against the possible closure of the South Water Street bike lane on Monday.

The bicycle lane links the East Bay Bike Path to the downtown, and city officials are discussing converting the lane into an extra one to accommodate vehicle traffic.

The idea is to help ease congestion brought on by the closure of the westbound span of the Washington Bridge.

City Councilor John Goncalves called the idea short-sighted and plans to submit a resolution against the measure.

A spokesperson for Mayor Brett Smiley's office says the city will have an announcement on how it will deal with the traffic situation.
