Woonsocket Warns Of Layoffs In Local Schools

Woonsocket Public Schools officials are considering budget issues, connected to a change in state funding.

The district will receive an additional 50 thousand dollars in total funding in the coming fiscal year for special needs and multi-lingual education but will lose one-point-two-million dollars through enrollment, inflation caps, and other factors.

Superintendent Patrick McGee says 20 to 30 employees could be laid off. COVID-related funds will be exhausted this fall, which were used for new hires, such as social workers, reading specialists, and school psychologists.

Notices will go out on June 1st if the funding problem is not resolved.
